A rewarding partnership

The Action Against Homelessness (AAH) group, based in Devonport, played a major role in getting Eveline House up and running four years ago, and it remains an important partner today.

Eveline House is managed by Anglicare Tasmania under the Youth2Independence program. It provides accommodation and wrap-around support to young people aged 16-24 who have been homeless or at risk of homelessness.

AAH supports Eveline House through several other Devonport-based community organisations.

It collaborates with the Zonta Club of Devonport, to make up cleaning hampers for new residents.

It offers cooking workshops through the social enterprise Loaves and Fishes, which is located right next door to Eveline.

AAH also provides Eveline students with vouchers to purchase clothes for job interviews and employment.

The young people living and studying at Eveline are looking forward to celebrating Pride Month in June. AAH, the Anglicare team and Working It Out will come together to offer activities and events that promote inclusion and support for the LGBTIQ+ community.

AAH Board member Cathy McClure is a social worker at Don College. She will run workshops on sexual health and positive relationships at Eveline House throughout the year.

“AAH is a not-for-profit organisation made up of passionate community members with a focus on providing support for homeless and disadvantaged people in and around the Devonport region,” says Cathy.

“We began by successfully lobbying for the construction of the Eveline House accommodation in Devonport.  Since its completion in 2019, we have worked together with Anglicare to provide support for the residents.  Our goal is to be a connection point to the broader community for the young people to access, so that they can become a valuable member of the community.”

A personal thank you

Two current students, Shane and Sarah, recently thanked AAH Board members with a certificate of appreciation and a presentation about their journeys to date.

Shane said: Groups like AAH help young people like us achieve goals in life.”

Sarah said: Thank you for supporting us in our goals and achievements.”
