  • The Way Back Service FAQ

What is The Way Back Support Service?

The Way Back is an aftercare service designed by Beyond Blue for people who have attempted suicide or experienced a suicidal crisis* (*subject to service capacity).  It provides non-clinical tailored support for up to three months following discharge from hospital.

How does The Way Back work?

The Way Back uses an assertive aftercare model, which means a Support Coordinator is responsible for maintaining contact with the person who has attempted suicide or experienced a suicidal crisis.  They support the person for up to three months, face-to-face and over the phone, and engage them with services related to some of the issues that led to their initial distress.

The program is personalised to meet individual needs and can include everything from support accessing clinical care during elevated periods of risk, to referrals to community based services such as financial or relationship counselling.

When and where does it operate?

The Way Back Support Service operates during business hours, Monday to Friday, 9am to 4pm (excluding public holidays).

The service is based in the following Anglicare Tasmania offices with outreach to other areas:

    • Launceston
    • Devonport
    • Burnie

The Referral pathway is integrated into the following hospital emergency departments, with support coordinators available to meet at the hospitals daily:

    • Launceston General Hospital
    • North West Regional Hospital
    • Mersey Community Hospital

Referrals can also be made through GP’s, please contact us for more information.
